Is China even that big of a threat to the US? While China’s economy has been growing, it’s not as dominant as one might think. The FT’s Martin Wolf says the US under Donald Trump has found a new enemy in China to replace the former Soviet Union and ‘the war on terror’. But he says Trump is wrong to fight for domination as a zero-sum game. The FT’s Philip Stephens has written about “The truth and lies of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson”: “Were it not for Mr Trump, Mr Johnson might have been held to account for the long and well-documented history of habitual lies. But Britain’s Tories are now going the way of America’s Republicans. In the choice of party leader good character and a moral code have been relegated in favour of the pinched English nationalism of hardline Brexiters.” Tap the link in our bio to read more. It’s been 30 years since the Tiananmen Square massacre, and here people take part in a candlelight vigil at Victoria Park on June 4, 2019 in Hong Kong. As many as 180,000 people were expected to attend the vigil to mark the anniversary. Commemorations took place in cities around the world on June 4 to remember those who died when Chinese troops cracked down on pro-democracy protesters. The People’s Liberation Army opened fire and killed hundreds or thousands of protesters in Beijing after students and workers gathered in Tiananmen Square for weeks to call for greater political freedom. No one knows for sure how many people were killed as China continues to censor any coverage or discussion of the event that takes place during the anniversary. Tap the link in our bio to read a story from the FT’s James Kynge, who covered Tiananmen Square as a young Reuters journalist. He tried to trace its legacy and what it means for China today. The farmers who produce the coffee you drink get just 1p from a £2.50 brew – pennies in US dollars. So why is your morning brew so expensive? That’s because in an everyday £2.50 brew, the coffee itself accounts for just 4% of the cost, or about 10p, while rent, labour and tax make up three-quarters of the overall price, according to consultancy firm Allegra Strategies. Just a fraction of that actually gets back to farmers. The human cost of China’s Tiananmen massacre is still being counted since the communist leaders sent in tanks on June 4 1989. But despite the western narrative that an emerging middle class is always destined to demand more choice, opinion polls by reputable international providers show that Chinese people currently have a high level of trust in their central government, writes the FT’s James Kynge. Here’s how that compares with other nations around the world. ? ‘So much of what China is today — and how it is seen in the world — derives from the brutality of a crackdown that smothered the hopes of a generation’, writes Kynge. ? He covered the demonstrations as a young journalist in Beijing at the time, and thirty years later, went back to trace its legacy. This is the difference five years can make☝️as the party of India’s incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a landslide victory in the country’s election. Swipe ? to see how that translates to seats in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house. The nationalist Bharatiya Janata party won big in the east of the country, extending its seat count in West Bengal to 18, where it eroded the share previously held by a strong regional party, the Trinamool Congress. It also won eight seats in the eastern state of Odisha. The BJP’s historic sweep of the vote — the first back-to-back electoral majority achieved by any party other than Congress — marks a turning point in India’s 72-year history as a democracy.
